Fifteen-year-old Fancy Augustine, a Haitian American teen, wants what seems simple, a boyfriend and an invitation to Imani Park's exclusive birthday party. When her best friend Tilly gets invited and reveals she has a secret boyfriend, Fancy is crushed and determined to secure her own perfect ending, no matter what it takes.

She makes a risky deal with Imani that guarantees her an invite if she can bring a boyfriend, convincing her crush Rahim to pretend in exchange for a supposed voodoo potion. As her plan spirals, she risks her friendship with Tilly, falls behind in school, and ignores her parents' warnings about being sent back to Haiti, all while insisting it will be worth it.
