Lucy and Laila have been inseparable ever since Laila handed Lucy a cupcake on the second day of kindergarten. But the summer before eighth grade brings heartbreaking news: because they live on opposite sides of town, they'll be attending different high schools.

Laila's invitation to compete in the Golden Cookie competition offers the friends a chance to stay together. The winner earns a full scholarship to the prestigious Sunderland boarding school, where Laila can pursue its elite culinary program and aspiring newscaster Lucy hopes to qualify for the renowned journalism track. But when a celebrity judge collapses after tasting Laila's showpiece, suspicion quickly falls on her. Trapped by a powerful storm that cuts off the outside world, Lucy and Laila must uncover the real culprit and clear Laila's name before it's too late.
