Twelve-year-old Valory is determined to leave her reputation as a thief behind - even if she earned it by stealing things. Rook, on the other hand, is a well-behaved kid who follows the rules...except for his habit of spying on the neighbors. When the two discover suspicious activity in a supposedly empty apartment across the alley, they form an unlikely detective team.

Home-schooled Rook's agoraphobia keeps him confined to his property, while confident, street-smart Valory can investigate without attracting attention. Their opposite strengths may be exactly what they need. But when their amateur investigation points to a recent kidnapping, the mystery turns dangerous. Soon they realize someone is watching them, too, and they'll have to uncover the truth before they become the next targets.
