Tomfoolery!

Tomfoolery! by Michelle Markel, illustrated by Barbara McClintock, is a lively biography of Randolph Caldecott, the influential illustrator who helped transform children's literature. The book captures his energetic personality and artistic talent, showing how his illustrations brought stories to life in ways rarely seen in the 19th century.

Through humorous storytelling and expressive artwork, the book traces Caldecott's path from a sketch-loving youth in the 1850s to a visionary artist who changed how illustrations interact with text. At a time when book illustrations were stiff and formal, his playful style introduced movement, humor, and emotion to picture books.

The biography celebrates Caldecott's lasting influence and the creativity that inspired the prestigious Caldecott Medal, awarded each year to outstanding picture books. Tomfoolery! invites readers of all ages to enjoy storytelling through art and explore the origins of modern children's literature.
