Ellingham Academy, a prestigious Vermont school for gifted thinkers, inventors, and artists, was founded by tycoon Albert Ellingham as a place where learning is a game, filled with riddles, winding paths, and gardens.

Soon after it opened, Ellingham's wife and daughter were kidnapped, leaving behind only a chilling riddle signed by the mysterious Truly, Devious. The case remains one of America's greatest unsolved crimes.

True-crime enthusiast Stevie Bell starts her first year determined to crack the cold case once she's settled with her unique housemates: the inventor, novelist, actor, artist, and jokester.

But when Truly Devious strikes again and death returns to Ellingham, the past refuses to stay buried. Someone has gotten away with murder.
